Although I didn’t detect any additives in this blanco, this expression is very much on the sweet side. The nose had a mellow agave and vanilla aroma. On the palate, I found cooked agave along with floral notes and grass on the back palate. The viscosity is on the thinner side here, and finish mid range. The sweetness is a detriment to this expression, it hamstrung the punch from the mid palate & finish. For me, “smoothness” doesn’t translate to fantastic tequila and although I can taste quality here, it is unfortunately marred by how heavy handed the sweetness is with this blanco from Compoveda.
The gateway drug to extra anejo tequila for red wine & bourbon drinkers. Although I am not a fan of the flavor profile, I admire what Compoveda is doing here. Admittedly, I doubt I’d be able to tell if this XA was tequila blind, but that isn’t to say that there isn’t any value in this offering from Compoveda. Red wine notes found within among cherry & other fruits. Mouth feel is very viscous. I still believe the barrel notes overpower, and it is way too sweet for me personally, but there is something unique here if you are willing to pay the price.
Niche tequila aged in wine casks. Certainly smells nice, floral aromas combined with agave and red wine. Similar flavor profile, but one dimensional and mild finish with a bit of unwanted heat for such a delicate flavor profile.
