Jan 27, 2023 calle23 Single barrel anejo #47 Nose very well balanced. Caramel, vanilla, barrel notes, oak, fruit? Raw fruit not cooked? Palate: More oak forward on the palate. Starts with oak, whiskey then quickly goes to agave sweetness, fruit, cinnamon. Let it sit awhile it really opens up and becomes more balanced. Finish: it has a great finish. A heat that lingers and lingers. Amazing! Leave the empty glass out for a bit and smell. Lots of cinnamon!

2021 Single Barrel Añejo sample bottle Barrel #31 Thick viscous legs. Deep golden hue. ?ABV? Nose: Butter, cinnamon, vanilla. A twist of lime. Roasted hazelnuts with a sprinkle of cardamom. Flavors: Considerable pepper heat blast, (and ethanol) that needs some resting time. Silky sweetness and barrel notes follow. Light colored tree fruit notes playfully dance with the vanilla and spices. A dynamic profile. The agave stays in the saddle, the whole ride, with a nice retrohale on the finish.

Barrel #19 | Sweet nose, a little heat on the mid palate, but not over powering. Balance, great finish. Very enjoyable.

Barrel #50 | Nose is stone fruit and some bourbon notes of oak and vanilla. Totally different from #19 with little of the herbal presence that barrel displays. Entry is smoother despite similar ABV and then explodes with flavors of orange zest, fruit, roast agave and the barrel. While there is a big alcohol impact initially the mouth quickly adjusts and can appreciate all that is going on here. The finish from this barrel is at least as long as barrel 19, possibly longer. This barrel #50 also does not have the slight bitter bit at the end #19 has, rather a fade of consistant natural sweetness, so +1.

Barrel #19 | Quite herbal on the nose with some light roast agave. Wood notes are evident, carried by the aromatic bouquet of 50+%ABV. In the mouth this initially has a burst of spice from the alcohol which eventually turns to a long complex finish as the various agave and barrel elements interact and peak, then fade. Barrel spice of caramel, oak, some slight vanilla and herbs and pepper from the agave give way to a fading tongue buzz of long duration. The barrel leaves a little bitter dregs as it overtakes the inherent sweetness of the agave. A worthy single barrel from the mind and talents of Sophie.

Barrel #19 | Bottle #12 Nose: Bold and pleasingly nuanced nose. Almost a dessert quality going on: toffee, butterscotch, coffee, white chocolate, milk chocolate and rounded barrel spice notes. A suggestion of cedar. No hint that this is nearly 51% ABV. Flavor: First pass: the spice and alcohol kick in a bit. This is followed up with rich caramelized agave, butterscotch with a dash of salt, leather notes, vanilla and hints of bittersweet chocolate. A nice citrus note adds dimension. Finish: Lengthy impressions of citrus, spice, leather, and dessert decadence. Barrel #19 is radically different from Barrel #47 that we received in Mexico!

Barrel #19 | Vanilla, cinnamon, butterscotch, sweet cooked agave and light fruit nose. Light and strong in the mouth with a spicy finish. Tastes hotter than Barrel 47.

Barrel #47 | Vanillla, caramel, fruit nose (papaya), with a light silkiness in the mouth and tangy long finish with a hint of spice. Nice, lightweight feel given it is high proof. Like the taste, weight and finish better, compared to Barrel 17.

Barrel #17 | Not Barrel #17. Barrel # 19 bottle #12 Nose: Bold and pleasingly nuanced nose. Flavor: First pass: the spice and alcohol kick in a bit. This is followed up with rich caramelized agave, butterscotch with a dash of salt, leather notes, vanilla and hints of bittersweet chocolate. Barrel #47 | lots of alcohol at my nose, making it difficult to get the aromas at first. Need to dig thru the aroma layers to get to the sweet spot. Spiciness from the barrel then shows up. And then letting some butterscotch and maple come to play. At tasting, it feels astringent. Vanilla and milk candy upon tasting. pretty complex taste. Pretty harsh on the end, this is what keeps this from getting a higher score. Otherwise, great tequila!

Barrel #47 | Nose: Complex and unique nose that does not start out a blockbuster, but gains impetus and momentum. Aromas start with vanilla, light ripe tree fruit and banana - like a tropical breeze. Next an earthiness builds, and melds with barrel spices of pepper, cinnamon, licorice, caramel and nutmeg. I’m finding a mineral, potting soil, spice, citrus, banana amalgamation that is slightly pungent - but unique and appealing. A whisper of light woody oak. Scents of lemon and orange zest. And all of these disparate elements work in a complementary fashion! Flavors: Hot and sassy barrel spices, pepper and orange flavored liqueur ping your palate with explosive sensations. There is a fair amount of ethanol, kicking it up too. It reminds me a little of those dark chocolate candies, filled with caramel and squishy orange liqueur. Hints of dark roasted coffee beans, and leather. Finish: The finish leaves a silky memory of citrus, spice, anise, caramel and vanilla. The trace oak finish holds an infused incense nuance, slight bitter almond and scent of peach pit. This one is truly unique.

Barrel #47 | Probably my favorite Añejo. The finish is magical… long and well balanced. Great barrel notes but not too overpowering. Just an incredible tequila all around.

Barrel #19 | I didn't know Calle 23 until a friend organized a tequila tasting. I'm very happy with this new find and to have had the chance to taste the limited editions barrel 19 and 50. Very beautiful and aromatic products, with distinct flavors from one barrel to another. Does anyone know if more single barrel are going to be produced from this brand?
