Top picks of off-the-radar tequilas that soon-to-be enthusiasts should consider.
Instead of sampling tequila in its birthplace, I reached out to six of the top tequila experts in Mexico to unearth their favorites.
Criollo is really special and unique. It is a high proof, additive free blanco tequila, at the top of it's class, and it is absolutely stunning. It's high powered in abv as well as flavors, and so silky and enjoyable to sip.
Here are 6 tequilas to impress any tequila fan, geek, snob, or nerd.
On the nose, huge punch of agave. Very vegetal, earthy, and mineral forward. Very herbal and “green”. An interesting floral note. On the palate, the agave is clearly the star of the show. White pepper, very earthy. I’ve heard a lot of people get minty notes and I’m not personally, but there’s something there that I can completely see being considered a mint note. Can’t put my finger on it, but it has that cool and fresh quality. Overall, a delicious tequila. Definitely have some if you can find it. There may be a bottle somewhere. I’ve seen it priced in the $130 range and that is too high for me personally, but at the $90 I found it at, I’m definitely happy with it.
