I found this to have a light nose compared to some other prized XAs. What I do get is nice with agave and butter and a bit of oak. Taste is fantastic. Buttery toffee, sweet cooked agave, light oak and caramel. A bit of cognac to the finish. Very nice. Not all pretty bottles have bad juice.
The lovely bottle brightened the room, especially since it was raining outside. It was a nice amber color in the glass. Aroma of caramel, oak and butter. Flavor of caramel, oak, cooked agave and some black pepper. The finish didn't last as long as expected. I was surprised to see this distillery also makes Pueblo Viejo, one of my bargain favorites. This one takes a hit in value for being 10 times the price.
Very sippable lots of barrel notes with some fruitiness.
After 3 years of having this bottle: The aroma is rich with notes of honey, subtle cooked agave, caramel, and milk chocolate, accompanied by delicate hints of brine and light ethyl. A touch of butterscotch with a soft whiskey tone adds depth and complexity to the olfactory experience. Upon tasting, the palate is enveloped in decadent butterscotch flavor, interwoven with flashes of pepperiness, chocolate, and rich almonds or earthy nuttiness. Notes of cooked pineapple and tropical fruit contribute to the indulgent profile, while a subtle salted butter creaminess adds a luxurious texture. The presence of whiskey enhances the overall flavor medley, harmonizing with the cacophony of flavors and cooked agave. The fruity honey exit is accompanied by fading bitterness and bourbon sweetness, with a lingering spiciness that tantalizes the body of the tongue for some time. This lingering finish adds a satisfying conclusion to the indulgent tasting experience.
Purchased for USD187.50 in November 2021. Rating the value a 7 due to the price I paid, it would be 1 to 2 points lower had I paid retail (USD250). Nose: Sweet, sugary caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, and other oak characteristics. The blend of American and French oak works very nicely. Palate: Creamy, rich agave, enveloped by the oak nuances. Finish: Slight alcohol burn that is faintly peppery. Some oak characteristics linger. Presentation: Beautiful decanter that also comes with a crystal/glass topper (which I'll never use). The box design is great. This is one of the few tequilas with a "pretty bottle" that is actually very good.
Rey Sol's flavor profile has remained consistant throughout the years. This 2016 bottle is no exception. So much goodness here. Upfront agave, dark chocolate, raspberry, berries, honey, mocha, molasses, marshmallow, nutmeg, butterscotch, leather, hint of vanilla. Worth every penny.
Lighter than I thought for an XA aged this long. Great nose, mid palate and finishes nicely. Little nuances of sweet agave. Awesome bottle with good juice
20th Anniversary aged for 10 years. 45% ABV. Sweet caramel apple nose with some agave still present. Delicious sipper with an expected slight sweetness from French Oak, with a mild burn. Enjoy the finish as the cinnamon spice pleasantly fades. I really enjoy this, and could only ask for slight more agave and complexity. The cost impacted my rating, but for a 10-year aged sipper in a beautiful bottle, I’m not unhappy with the cost.
Beautiful presentation but not just a one trick pony. The nose is full of oak, burnt sugar, wet earth, tobacco, apple, and very floral. The palate throws waves of carmel, maple, and butterscotch. Some vanilla and ripe berries present themselves. Sweet but somehow not overdone. Full mouth feel and long legs coat the glass. Long sweet and spicy finish. This tequila is great for the cognac fan or even the bourbon nerd. Perfect to be sipped neat after dinner. This comes in a beautiful decanter and a long 6 years of aging but the price will turn off some folks.
Excellent cognac style tequila. Just dinging a bit for price and a little more heat than I’d expect. Similar to AsomBroso with heavy vanilla tones.
Aroma of agave, sugar cookie, tobacco, caramel, and toasted wood. Flavor is vanilla, light spice, butterscotch and agave. Great balance and complexity. Better as it opens up.
This 6 year XA will give off an amazing aroma of melted butter, roasted nuts and dark chocolate covered cherries - with plumb and apricots. The palate will greet you with barrel oak, but will maintain steamed agave. This is very hard to accomplish with a 6 year XA. Somehow they made it work. It has a sweet, brown sugar finish. Although it comes in a crystal, handmade decanter, the price is still commensurate with the juice. I found this to exceed my expectations.
10yr aniversario single barrel. Nice nose, not too much oak for a 10yr. But you get quiet enough taste of it in the front end. Balanced it by the mix pepper dark chocolate, hint of vanilla and heat towards the end.
This one if the best tequila I had si far. Great Aromas like Caramel, cinnamon, oak, just sweet as heaven. Can this be real it is made the right way. This Taste Amazin!!!!!
A favorite extra añejo of mine! A little spicy up front on the palate but softens nicely with a butterscotch finish!
Sooooo gentle considering the time in oak, it’s rare to find balance and restraint in an expensive XA. Toasted nuts and caramel linger far after your last sip, the finish is by far the star of the show.
Nice, fragrant aroma full of fruit and oak. You can literally pick up the aroma from 3 feet away. Flavor is smooth and creamy with sweet fruit and caramel upfront that evolves to a nice baking spice bite. The finish is medium to long. This is a great end of the evening sipper. The bottle is also fantastic. 03-29-2018
Aroma: Big aroma of butterscotch, vanilla and baked tropical fruit. Floral berry notes and hint of wet rocks, citrus and layered barrel spices. Flavor: Balanced and buttery toffee and hazelnut and leather notes. The baked agave is still present, with only light oak notes for an XA. Viscous with vanilla, anise and pepper undercurrents. Trace earthiness. Slow lingering finish with a little black pepper reposing on the back of my tongue.
Maybe it's the moment or it's really great juice but I'm enjoying this at El Presidio in Mazatlan Centro Histirico with my wife of two years. ????????????
This is an extra anejo that has not gone too far, which is rare. Agave is still present and the wood isn't introducing any unwanted spice. Good stuff, if you can afford it!
Full review to come Purchased for $50 below retail (online), nearly $200 less than all in (w/ WA state liquor & sales tax) Best XA thus far by a healthy margin. Still to try G4 7yr and Tears of Llorana (soon)
There is a distinct difference between hype and the truth. Rey Sol is the truth! Since I began drinking tequila this has been on my list. The only time I would see a bottle was in a decorative manner filled with colored liquid as a means of paying homage to another great pour. Rey Sol is tequila’s favorite tequila! It’s everything you want in a pour. It’s smooth. It’s easy. It’s flavorful. There’s a subtle heat on the finish but mind-blowingly cool on the initial taste. I cannot wait to try—No! HAVE this again!!
Aroma: caramel & vanilla hint of cinnamon Taste: oak, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon Finish: quick but well balanced with sweetness & agave. Definitely for bourbon lovers.
One of the cool things about La Cata is that they make things available to tequila geeks like you and me. Their first exclusive offering is the special edition “La Cata” single barrel extra añejo from Rey Sol.

Significant barrel influence from new American oak & new French oak barrels. Tons of caramel, vanilla, and honey on this extra anejo. This flavor profile is sure to win any whiskey lover over!
