On the nose it smells clean and sweet, very distinctive agave, pepper, and mint. Full of flavor, sweet, herbal and full of body, does not have the burn expected for a high proof. Long finish with the herbal flavors dominating at the end. Very pleasant tequila in all aspects. A must for every tequila amateur and connoisseur!

This is such a beautiful expression. Unfortunately, the hype has made the price and availability near unobtainable. It's white pepper hot and cooked agave all the way. Unbelievably complex, finding new flavors as it opens up. It's big and bold, put on your seat belt.

LOT BLA-039P 07/12/2021 Bottle No. 3668 50.5% ABV Wow Initial nasal impact is warming (keep in mind 50.5% ABV). Sweet cooked agave, celery/celery seed, all spice, cinnamon, grapefruit citrus, floral, herbal and fresh cut ancho pepper, anise on the developing aroma. Need multiple visits to the glass to pick up all the layered aromas. Generous heat on the initial mouthfeel. Buttery on the tongue. The sweet cooked agave hits first with the generous heat. The flavor is dominated by cooked agave, anise, black licorice, grapefruit zest and coffee bean in the background. Very complex. A long drying finish with great pepper, herbal and cinnamon note. The retro nasal brings out the coffee bean and herbal character. This is THE high proof blanco. Can drink it all night. And I might just do that. Found it in a local shop for $99. I consider that a bargain. This is the ultimate High Proof Blanco.

On the nose, lots of agave and citrus, some minerality and a saline note that I’m loving. Baking spices, cinnamon, very floral.. a little herbal. On the palate, just absolute loads of agave, spices, a little bit of brineyness. A little bit of anise sneaks up, so much going on here. Definitely a little heat but not too much for 50.5%. It’s got some of that saltiness and a finish that just goes on for quite some time. A little bit of chocolate but reminds me of cafe de La olla. Top notch blanco.

Tasting date July 3, 2022 tasted blind with some other h.p. blancos: criollo, cascahuin 48, siembra valles, fortaleza still, fuenteseca 2018 and cazcanes no 9. Rated this top 2 with Criollo. OCHO PUNTAS NOM 1474 NOSE: 1st try = very strong nose, pungent, vegetal, briney, not so agave forward, maybe a little green pepper, jalepeño w/o heat, grassy, taste is similar to nose. 2nd try = nose pops, briney, funky, w/ floral notes, green tea and that bubblegum indicative of an Estes/Carlos Camarena product. TASTE: similar to the nose. sweet agave, green tea bubblegum, pepper, anise FINISH: sweet agave and pepper. Lingers very good OVERALL: Very complex perhaps from the open air fermentation in wood and added aeration.

I bought a bottle from a friend, but the retail is USD60 and, in my opinion, worth much more, hence the value rating of 9. Ratings for other aspects are high because the aroma is quite vibrant and the tequila is very flavorful. Neither has anything offensive or obtuse. Nose: some yeast, citrus, cooked agave, sweet earth. Palate: citrus, agave, some yeast, minerality, sweet earth. Finish: Brief alcohol up front, which turns into minerality with a small amount of earthiness.

This special offering is from a collection of cuts from the 2nd distillation run. The heads, Puntas, are the beginning of the run and they contain intense flavors and they are high in proof. This “Distillers Cut” was 128 proof prior to being reduced to 101 proof - 51.5% ABV. The scent is fresh. The alcohol is present amongst creamy cooked agave, grapefruit / mango, salinity and even a hint of spearmint and cilantro. There’s a mixture of floral, fruity, herbal and citrus. This one has it all. On my first sip the alcohol tingle hits you first and then a peppery punch of cooked agave immediately follows. There’s a lot of minerality along with some salinity, anise, cinnamon and citrus oil extract. Even with the ovenproof this special offering is very enjoyable. It begs for you to keep sipping and exploring its flavors. Don’t hate me but this would make a killer cocktail but I’ll mostly sip and savor this one. 101 Overproof - 2021 La Ladera Not Chilled Filtered

Agave, grapefruit, salt water, and some alcohol on the nose. As I swirl the glass there’s legs for miles. I’m tasting agave, white pepper, salt water, citrus, cinnamon, anise, and some minerals. There’s a lot going. The high proof has some initial kick but then it opens up nicely as you explore the wide range of flavors that keep revealing themselves.

Lots of gorgeous beautiful agave on the nose. Plenty of pepper on the palate with agave. Definitely has a high proof kick but in a good way. Strong finish. Has that signature Ocho profile.

Aroma of minerals, agave, and light citrus oils. Kind of floral in the background. Flavor of cooked agave, lime, pepper, and salty dandelion. Hot finish but that's what you pay admission fir for with this one. Great high prood expression, so glad to see more and more distillers doing this! Once this opens up, mint, menthol, and anise rule.

Everything here is maxed out. This likely is at the max ABV @ 50.5%. Any more and it would seem too hot and be a tongue shredder. It does need to be sipped slowly at first to ready your mouth but a few minutes spent doing that preps you for the high proof agave bomb this is. Not very viscous or oily this leaves nice perlas in the juice when shaken and great legs in the jarrito. The more I sip, the richer this becomes. Another brilliant idea brought to fruition from the 14+ year collaboration between the late Tomás Estes and Carlos Camarena. Gracias gentlemen.

I've been waiting on this profile for months, and finally arrived! Ocho Puntas offers a aromatic character as soon as you open it. Let it open up for a couple minutes and experiment finding the right glassware for it, I used the Neat, Riedel and D&L agave glass. Once you dive in, you're received by a fresh and crisp entrance that doesn’t get overpowered by the superior alcohol compounds, rather invites you to sip in. Aroma: Heavy-forward cooked agave, green fruits, tart citrus notes (grapefruit/lime), herbal notes (celery/crisp bell pepper) and briny/mineral nuances. Flavor: Cooked agave that just covers your mouth instantly that suddenly drops with a buttery texture (wonder if it comes from the malolactic fermentation process). The agave sweetness is balanced out with fruity notes (pear, green), sweet citrus notes (cara cara orange, mandarin, grapefruit) and herbal notes (celery, anise, mint, green bell pepper) Minimal alcohol attack even being a high proof at 50.5% abv, you really get to enjoy a magnificent profile. Finishes up with a olive/salty (briny) that is complemented by the minerality (earthy) aspect of the Ocho terroir idea. Short to medium finish (dry) with a tannic sensation, that is not seen in many brands. My new Ocho favorite

Nose: The aromas come in layered waves. Herbal: celery, fennel and cilantro. Sumptuous agave sweetness, with tag-along cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. The smell of a salty sea breeze. Alkaline minerals, wet grass and soil. Citrus: Lima and grapefruit zest. A gentle waft of molasses. At 50.5%, virtually no ethanol blow back - just aromatic warmth. Flavors: The flavors come at you from all directions: Treble, midrange and bass notes. Staccato notes of anise, ginger, cinnamon and pepper punctuate the palate. Then rich round agave, hints of flowers, and ripe fruit components take a warmer, more prominent role in the profile. Buttery and briney. As Puntas continues to open up, dark roast Oaxacan coffee and bittersweet chocolate bass notes emerge, and follow through in the finish.. A fine tribute to the last collaboration between Maestros Carlos y Tomas.

Dare I say it? This may be the best Ocho Plata I've ever tasted. It is also the last project that Tomas Estes worked on with Carlos Camarena, and it is a gift to tequila lovers. The concept: Take the best cut of the distillation runs (60-63% abv) and blend them all together. Add just enough water to bring it down to 50.5% abv, and bottle it. The result: Super rich and complex aroma with a lot going on. It is packed with the aroma of cooked agave, floral (rose?) and citrus notes (grapefruit?), anise, brine, olive and minerals. SMELLS AMAZING! Flavor: More agave, minerals, brine and olive that lingers nicely in the finish, which is long and fun because of the higher ABV. Also, let this breath throughout the time you're drinking it (don't rush!) and it will continue to evolve and reveal more and more interesting characteristics. Bravo!!!
