Oscar Vazquez, Sergio Cruz and the Tierra de Ensueño team brings us this single barrel Reposado. This tequila was aged for 6 months in a Wheated Bourbon Barrel and presented to us at 43% ABV, 86 proof. NOM1580 I like the hay color of this spirit. You can tell it’s been aged but it looks more like a Chardonnay than a whiskey. The aromas are moderate in strength. You don’t have to dig too deep to enjoy these scents. Initially I get sweetness from the cooked agave and the barrel sugars. The agave gives it some slight earthiness while the barrel provides the spice. There is a light whiskey like aroma. It’s the caramel and barrel spices that white American oak barrels typically give. The agave sugars and the barrel sugars are very intertwined. It’s a balanced nose and it’s slightly floral. Let’s taste it. That agave sweetness and earthiness punch first but the barrel spices quickly follow. The agave sweetness and earthiness are from the mature cooked agaves. It’s caramelized agave sugars. The barrel spices are mostly dry cinnamon and black pepper but there are some darker vegetal notes too akin to charred peppers. The flavors bounce back and forth from natural sweetness to barrel spice. It’s on the sweet side, for me, but very flavorful and enjoyable. The extra proof gives it an extra kick and density of flavors. Overall the sweet and spice from the aromas are more intense on the palate. It’s agave and spice and I think it’s nice! Tierra de Ensueño continues to hit home runs.

Aroma: buttery, stone fruit: cherry, some apple, vanilla bean Flavor: baking spices, toffee, cocoa - well balance of flavor. I love the finish- I get some tropical notes. Definitely a nice sipper!

Aroma: cinnamon, apple, vanilla, oak, hint of citrus. Flavor: oak, black pepper, raw agave, minerality, earthy, sweet cream. Finish: somewhat short, oaky, and earthy. Going in I thought this would be a very bourbon forward reposado but it’s retained a lot of the agave character and earthy elements.

First taste reveals a big impact from the wheated barrel, with notes I’m struggling to define. I’ll gonna revisit this ASAP and come back to share full notes.

Excellent. The barrel influence is there, but it’s not overwhelming. Just a very nice, balanced reposado.
