This is the clear bottle from NOM 1558 and not the frosted bottle from NOM 1107. Tequila is light in flavor perhaps guided towards newbie drinkers. Aroma starts with cooked agave, thyme and citrus. Flavor follows the aroma with added sweetness and spices.
This one opens up very nicely and I get a ton of chocolate and cherry. I may be influenced by my Dad (Chris Ancell) but I also get the toasted marshmallow that he mentioned in his review. The flavor is very oaky but not a huge shocker for an Anejo. The finish is smooth and I get a slightly tart fruit note at the end.
In comparison to the blanco this has a lot more going on in the aroma. It's a nice mix of oak and butterscotch. I'm not surprised that the agave is essentially none existent here. All of the flavor seems to be coming from the barrel as its oaky (not overpowering) and a slight hint of sweetness on the finish. Completely different from the blanco (in a good way) but would have preferred to have some agave here.
From start to finish this is a bit of a lackluster tequila. There's not much on the nose but I do get a slightly medicinal note and minimal agave. The flavor follows and almost tastes watered down. It vanishes so quickly that it's hard to pick up any notes. This almost feels like something I'd put in a margarita for someone who hates tequila. There's barely anything to taste here... It's not bad or terrible it just doesn't have much going on.
Immediate impression of aroma is toasted marshmallow which again raises the question (I say again because of similar thoughts with the blanco) of "natural". Possibly a little oak and cherry in the aroma but I may be stretching here to find something "normal". A bit of vanilla in the flavor but overall a sickly sweet flavor that has a bit of spice but is basically just pretty bad. The spice lingers in the mouth on the finish. Disappointing...
Small sample at event Would recommend for mixing as it’s a fair tasting profile.
