Beautiful light nose with some agave. Palate has lovely barrel notes and a good finish
I think the nose on this is very nice. I get agave and bubble gum. The taste is okay. I get agave but the flavor of black pepper is very prominent and I don’t want that in my XAs. I do get some cinnamon but would prefer that this pulled out more chocolate or vanilla
Nose: agave / caramel/ oak / earth / mineral / vanilla/ banana/ hint of lime / anise / nutmeg/ hint of chocolate/ butterscotch/ molasses Taste: sweet agave cooked / oak / caramel/ cinnamon/ vanilla/ banana/ apple / orange peel/ mint / tea / licorice / baking spices / hint of nutmeg/ chocolate/molasses/ hint of tobacco Finish: a medium amount of viscous mouthfeel is nice….it’s not syrup at all, but has a smooth velvety finish. There’s a bit of alcohol on the backend of the swallow. The massive oak flavor is the lingering presence throughout the end of the taste. This extra anejo has lots of bold flavors that are very good, but the oak aroma and especially the oak flavor seem to dominate the whole sip. The oakiness is unbalanced with the rest of the flavors. There’s a lot to enjoy, but I’m going to need to let this bottle rest and retry in a week or 2 to see if getting it cracked open will let the bottle breath and maybe reduce some of the oakiness.
A lucky find in San Antonio, 1579 Pasote is something to behold.
NOM 1579 updating 4.7.2024 Having with Alan at Luis Torres hacienda 4/7/24 This tequila from 1579 is amazing and perfectly balanced. It is now my favorite xa Smell = tropical fruit, barrel spices and sweet cooked agave, brown sugar, cinnamon Palate = sweet agave, sweet potatoes, barrel spices Finish = medium heat 93 pts I've had this in the past when it was first introduced ? 2016? but I hadn't rated it. revisiting with a small sample cooked agave, hints of apple, pears, some barrel notes, not a lot of oak, which I like, a little heat on the end. well balanced
Aroma of agave and oak right up front followed by a floral and chocolate note. Flavor is a real nice oak and agave balance where one doesn't overpower the other. Some cooked brown sugar sweetness and cinnamon and peppery finish. Didn't get the overpowering heat that some have mentioned but enough to keep a nice presence in carrying the flavors well into the finish
A masterpiece. Simply excellent. 1579 Gem. Buy one
Still finding my way around extra anejos. This has a lot of depth in flavor. Maybe in part for to the slight over proof. Very fruity on the nose and in taste. In the pastor liner I like the agreed expressions more than the Blanco. Overall very well done.
very nice and agave forward, but a little sweet, and a bit of alcohol buzzing
Purchased in June 2022 for USD140. Aroma: plenty of cooked agave well balanced with oak, minerality, light fruitiness and citrus, orange. Palate: see aroma. Reminiscent of a creamy soda? Very unusual, but very enjoyable. Finish: orange, creaminess, alcohol and minerals.
I let this open up for about 10 minutes. There’s an initial oaky bitterness that balances out midway and through a very pleasant finish. However, the initial taste wasn’t as pleasant as the finish for me.
This XA is an instant classic. So much going on here. Transitions from a fantastic blanco through all the Pasote expressions to get to this killer XA. Retains all of the warmth from the agave from the blanco and then some! Oily upon entry with yams, berries, candied walnuts, dried fruit. pineapple, blood orange, nutmeg, cinnamon, citrus, toffee, so much goodness here! One of the best XAs made in recent years!
Light in color and great bottle too. Aroma is very good with fruit and some mild sweetness. Also getting undertones of vanilla and leather. Taste is an explosion of roasted agave with some spice. It is not overly sweet (gracias adios). It feels great in the mouth. It is not crazy complex-just really good. Finish is fantastic with some good heat and just the right amount of sweetness. Long lasting. This is what a great XA can be! No superficial dark color or syrupy sweet nonsense.
Light in color. Heat, whiskey, cooked agave. I wanted to really like this since I am a huge Pasote Blanco fan. Will need to retaste at another time. Didn’t feel it lived up to its reviews. / retasted again and found it opened up and was outstanding
Aroma : Full of cooked agave, vanilla, oak. This also carries some fruity undertones in the form of apple/pineapple/pear notes. Taste : The fruity undertones from the aroma carry through strongly here, accompanied by agave, citrus, and some minerality. There is also a hint of spice here that contrasts the sweeter fruit flavors, and the texture is oily and full bodied. Finish : Decently long and carries stronger notes of oak and vanilla that invite you back for another sip, and another, and another... This is like Cascahuín Extra Añejo's long lost cousin when it comes to the cooked agave/fruity flavor dynamic with some barrel notes; one of the possible routes a distiller may take in making a great Extra Añejo. In other words, buy this.
Another classic Pandillo/Felipe Camarena XA with its pale color and complex aroma of cooked agave, citrus, sweet fruit (apple, plum) and underpinning minerality (wet stone, clay). Spicy heat sits right on top of sweet fruit flavor at the open. (This is a contrast to many tequilas that open with sweetness then shift to spice. A really nice blend here.) These two continue to blend and dissipate at a similar pace in a mid to long finish. Again, the higher ABV is hardly noticeable in terms of heat but does push the agave and other flavors forward. Quite a bit of similarity between the Pasote and the Volans but to my taste the Pasote comes out slightly ahead. 12-24-2019 7th Annual Xmas XA tasting
Nose is wonderfully bright cooked agave, nutmeg, cinnamon and citrus and it just delivers Taste is just a fantastic as the bright agave turns into cinnamon for a moment and then solid black pepper. Just as you appreciate the pepper, the ride starts again as caramelly/vanilla finish lasts for the perfect amount of time. What a journey
This 4 year XA from Felipe is special. The nose is complex. I detect cooked agave, sweet juicy plum , vanilla and some slight oak. I taste a sweet mineral brine, cooked agave and toasted brûlée. The finish is as wonderful as the first taste. This is truly a sipping tequila. ¡Salud!
Aged 4 years in used barrels, this XA from the mind of Felipe Camarena has a golden color with some copper highlights. Presented in a polished, heavy glass bottle and a basic clamshell case this resembles the well known Avion 44 package. At a similar price point to the A 44 this XA has a very different flavor profile with a full and robust flavor imparted by Bib & Tucker barrels in El Pandillo's cellar. At 45% ABV this has a ton of spice on the palate from agave and barrel spice of caramel, oak, clove as well as a nice bite from the higher ABV. The taste is full with natural sweetness and some nice oiliness and really blooms with a small amount held in the mouth and worked around the tongue and gums for 20-30 seconds before swallowing. This finishes with a hint of bitter from the barrel but with everything else going on it isn't worth taking score away.

There’s a lot of fruity notes but I find this rough around the edges. Not something that I truly enjoy sipping. Don Pippocho has spoiled me
Nose has a grassy aroma, with light vanilla and caramel, light citrus. Taste: Vanilla, Carmel and vegatal taste with a night light heat building up and staying on the back for some time.
Honestly, arette has his beat day and day out with that said there is no way I could recommend this to a friend at the price point it’s giving right now however it is enjoyable. at $150 you will definitely enjoy this drink and if you’re my close friend you cannot afford this drink apologies. I don’t recommend it that much but if you’re freak go for it Edit 8/28 this tequila is such a letdown for the fact that it’s an extra anejo, honestly it’s a joke. If you’ve ever just wanted to watch several hundred dollar bills burn totally buy this…
What an extra añejo!!! I have to say that the fact that it is 45abv helps keep the agave presence in the front lines. It’s so clean and well-made. It has everything: sweet agave, oak, vanilla, alcohol. Its finish is outstanding. I love this extra añejo, and I am not into them. It is sad to know that it is never to be made again in NOM 1579.
The highest end bottles of agave spirit are best enjoyed on their own. Here’s a look at some of the world’s best sipping tequilas.

Nose: Fruity as heck. Pineapple, agave, something like kiwi. Oak comes through, some vanilla. A touch of caramel, I swear I’m almost betting chocolate. Palate: Agave is more front and center than the nose but definitely still fruity. Pineapple, orange peel. A little oak and vanilla. Incredibly well balanced and complex. Cery oily, long finish. Amazing. This is the only bottle I have and with the NOM change, I’ll never see this again. I have to sit with this and bring it out on special occasions. Truly a tragedy to see this gone.
