Not a bad value to price profile. But just leaves me flat - a bit too oaky and sweet…

Sept 19, 2023 San Matias Gran Reserva NOM 1103 Bottled 09/06/2017 NOSE: let it open up - tropical fruit, floral, caramel, vanilla, orange peel, some agave, a little oak. I like it because it's not too oaky PALATE: a little more muted than the nose. Im getting barrel notes, some fruit, cherry, agave, vanilla, carmel, oak. This bottle is from 2017, and there was less than 1/4 in the bottle. LEGS: nice and long COLOR: golden, not too dark. FINISH:  short to medium

Oak,caramel, vanilla aroma and the taste was the same except it had a reminiscent of vinegar to me as well. Very acidic to me. For me, it gave me heartburn nearly every time I decided to crack open the bottle and sip it (had it a few months). I've never experienced that with a XA before. Strange but true.

Nose- Brown sugar, Caramel, Butterscotch, Alcohol Palate- Caramel, Vanilla, Oak Finish- Woody, hot, dies off quickly Overall: Clean — Good flavor, very oaky, however a bit hot. Wonderful extra añejo expression for the price.

Amazing value XA. If you like oak and butterscotch this is for you! That’s not really my thing so the rating suffers. I did have a 5-year single barrel from Moreno’s Liquors that for me is much better than the standard blend. I’d give that one a score in the 80s and the regular one in the 70s.

On the nose, Initially cooked agave but then caramel swarms the nose. Butterscotch and maple. Hazelnut and chocolate, like Nutella but not nearly so sickly sweet. A cognac like note for sure. Definitely fruity, I swear I’m getting a hint of pear. On the palate, Spicy, sweet, and oaky. There’s cooked agave, but it’s definitely mixed in with the the flavors and not the star by any means. Definitely a cognac type of note and caramel. A little bit of heat, but not too much. Very interesting. A tasty tequila, agave is definitely not the star of the show but it is very tasty and a tremendous value.

Don't love this one. Sweet aroma but burn on the finish and okay flavor. Not my pick for a sipper but may pair nicely with food or in a drink. Update: after sitting for a week, it's much better and not as sweet

Strong cherry aroma at outset. Over time alcohol becomes more present and other barrel aromas - vanilla, pine, fresh cut lumber. Flavor opens with a spicy heat then moves to fruit notes with strong cherry again appearing. Overly sweet for my taste. Spicy finish lingers for a relatively short time. 12/24/2020 - 8th Annual Xmas XA tasting

Aromas of agave, cinnamon, and oak upon first impression. After a little while I get some fruity notes along with a bit more barrel influence. The taste is all caramel, vanilla, oak, and leather. Not much agave to speak of, so this is definitely a tequila for whiskey drinkers. The finish is a little more spicy with black pepper and oak. I wasn't expecting much for a $40 XA, but this actually pretty good, especially if it's your first experience with an extra añejo.

Price / value is very reasonable for an xa. Found it to be a little too oily and some bitter heat. A good sipper for comparisons.

Caramelized agave, chocolate, maple, vanilla, a touch of heat. This is a bargain XA. Good after dinner sipper.

It’s really rare to find an extra Añejo with agave still present but they have achieved in this case. This is a tequila drinkers tequila, I am a big fan.

The 100% agave version is the one to seek out. Bottles from several years ago were mixtos along with other San Matias products.

San Matias Gran Reserva is a great tequila and at aroound $50, a bangin' deal! Lots of spice and fruit tones, along with some cooked agave, caramel, earth, coffee and leather notes in this very complex and deep añejo. For me, it has too many heavy wood notes, but for people that have a bourbon background, I would highly recommend this tequila to them!

Nose: Agave mixed with brown sugar and vanilla. Brown sugar and vanilla are more expressive after letting it breathe for a bit Taste: Agave, hint of pepper, hint of oak, slight burn Finish: Agave with a bit of a burn, but just a bit Overall: Solid tequila with an unbeatable price point. Wish there were more barrel notes or more complex flavors given that this is a reserva, but I will absolutely drink and buy again at only $55

San Matías Extra Añejo is decent but not remarkable. It has notes of caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, star aniz, and oak, but the flavors aren’t very bold. The finish is somewhat short, and it lacks the body, complexity, and richness of other the extra añejos I've had. It’s a good sipping option, and while there are better XA out there, the price is hard to beat. I would recommend you try it for yourself and you be the judge. As for me, once my bottle is gone, I won't repurchase another one but would have it again if someone offered a glass.

The normal version of the Gran Reserva is a blend of extra añejos and is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).  The version of the Gran Reserva under review here is a single barrel (Barrel #129). This single barrel is 90 proof (45% ABV). The extra añejo comes in a black glass bottle that looks elegant, though part of me wishes the bottle was clear glass to the tequila’s beautiful golden color was visible inside.  Some people may not like the screw cap top, but the cap does ensure for an airtight seal that better protects the tequila from evaporation and over-aeration. COLOR: Golden amber NOSE: Deep & rich with prominent alcohol initially (this dissipates as it aerates in the glass) with sweet, spice notes.  The aroma profile is defined by a mix of Cooked Agave & Baking Spices (Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cloves, Cardamom) with Oak/Barrel notes reminiscent of walking through a Christmas market where there are lots of wood ornaments, trees, & wreaths, evoking a winter vibe.  There is also some Caramel/Butterscotch, Vanilla, Dark Cherries (somewhat akin to the cherry cordial fillings chocolates), Dark Chocolate mixed with Hazelnuts, & a deeply spiced Honey.  The aroma profile reminds me of the Panettone with raisins & dried fruits that I grew up with (or a Babka). PALATE:  The flavor profile is much less sweet than the nose suggests.  What comes across are the deep spice, Oak/Barrel notes, Dark Chocolate/Cacao, Dark Red Fruits (Cherries) & Dried Fruits, Black Pepper, & spiced Honey.  There is a hint of anise-like or Oak tannin bitterness, but it is balanced by the spice, Oak, & the other flavors. FINISH: Medium-long MOUTHFEEL: Good viscosity with tears/legs & pearls on the sides of the glass VALUE:  The regular version of the Gran Reserva is one of my favorite extra añejos at an excellent price.  This single barrel dials all the regular version’s flavors up to 13. ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN?  It’s a single barrel and I’ve bought multiple bottles.  The regular Gran Reserva will always be on my shelf.
