Alto Canto comes to us from a single brand NOM, NOM1636, in the Sierra del Tigre mountains (9000 ft elevation) outside of Guadalajara. They use organic agave, mountain spring water, brick ovens, tahona, wild malolactic fermentation in wood vats with fibers, copper stills, and then rested in new American oak barrels. On the nose, I’m getting some dried red fruit on top of baked caramelized agave. There’s a touch of a dry musty barrel note that also presents itself like dry alfalfa. The minerality is present as well as some vanilla and some slight nuttiness. It’s a nice nose for a Reposado. It was aged for 6 months. It seems like the agave sweetness, red fruits, and the barrels notes all hit simultaneously. They are cohesive flavors with some pepper showing up for the finish. The pepper seems like it’s a combination of the white pepper from the blanco and the wood tannins from the barrels. It’s a flavorful Reposado that has a nice sweetness and density of flavors. Overall this is a very flavorful and unique Reposado.
