NOM 1079 version. Date: Originally reviewed 6/8/2012, update 8/24/2013. Source: My private collection. Setup: Riedel Overture glass, neat, room temperature. History: Although 1921 blanco, reposado and anejo continue to be produced, this Reserva Especial Reposado version is no longer in production. It’s a terrific treasure bottle if you can find it. The brand was named "1921" to commemorate the final year of the Mexican Revolution. This is a highland tequila that was originally produced at NOM 1079 (Agave Tequilana Prod. y Comercializadores, SA CV). 1921 is no longer produced in NOM 1079 and is now produced in NOM 1535 (Destileria Morales, S.A. de C.V.). Production: 1921 Reserva Especial Reposado is double distilled using copper pots. (The new juice produced at NOM 1535 is distilled in stainless steel pots with copper coils). Aged between 9 and 14 months in 200 liter medium charred American oak barrels. The barrels are only used 5 times. The first time it used the tequila is aged for only 9 months. For the second use of the barrel, the tequila is aged for 11 months, the third use for 12 months, the forth use for 13 months and final use for 14 months. Although all of bottles are designated as reposado some are aged over 12 months and could be considered an anejo. Tasting Notes: This bottle used for this review is marked LOTE No. 190. This is a single barrel tequila so you can expect variances from lot to lot. I tasted it in a Riedel glass at room temperature after breathing for 10 minutes. Color: Deep golden straw color. Looks more like an anejo than a reposado. Nose: Right from the nose I knew I would love this Tequila. Aromas of caramel, apricot and cherry with a hint of lemon, mild agave but not much wood coming through and very little alcohol. Entry: On entry you get hit with lots sweet buttery agave, fruit and mild oak. Body: Complex and smooth with a sweet tone. Flavors of cooked agave, pepper, caramel, a little oak with a nice oily mouth feel. There is no bitterness and it has a very well balanced alcohol tone throughout. Others have described it as smoky but I’m not picking that up. I’m getting loads of sweet fruity agave, and loving it. Finish: Medium in length with hints of vanilla, spice, fruit with mild heat and agave coming through. The 1921 Reserva Especial is one of my favorite reposados, but unfortunately as I mentioned, it is no longer produced.

Review #137 - 1921 Reserva Especial Tequila Reposado

A very nice and complex effort from the folks at NOM 1079 and 1921 Tequila. There's elements to this one that you rarely, if ever, experience in other tequila.
