It's Sunday! Sipping Sunday!! Happy No Dirty Dishes Day!!! Tonight's pour comes from NOM 1580 Hacienda El Olvido, Mosto Reposado. This is a newer brand that is currently only sold in Virginia ABC Stores. Mosto is owned by a partnership between Nelson and Paulo Benavides and Partners from the Veil Brewing Company in Richmond Virginia. Nelson and Paulo originally hail from the Arandas area of Jalisco, but moved to the US many years ago. They run a successful restaurant and have been in the business for years. Oscar Vazquez Camarena is their Master Distiller. Who is setting a blazing path for several brands now with his skills! Production of this Reposado begins in the Agave Field were ripe Estate Grown Agaves are harvested. They are then slow cooked in traditional Stone/Brick Ovens. Once cooled, agaves are Macerated with Roller Mills with Deep Well Water being added before Fermenting in Stainless Steel Tanks with Natural Wild Yeasts. After fermentation, the Mosto is distilled twice in a combination of Copper Pot Stills and Stainless Pot with Copper Coils. Once distilled it is then Rested in used Willett Estate Bourbon Barrels for 5 months. Aroma: On the nose, Rich Cooked Agave blends with Sweet Vanilla and Cinnamon. Oak is present, but more in the form of a quick Kiss. There is a nice Earthiness as well as a very nice Minerality. A nice soft touch of Orange Citrus. And towards the end a Peach and Light Floralness lends itself to the mix. The nose shows an elegance. Taste: From that Elegance, this takes a 180 turn and smacks with Rich Agave and Oak. A sweet blast of Vanilla is toned down by a Spicy Black Pepper/Cinnamon mix. The Earthiness comes out in a stronger fashion too. The influence of the Whiskey is hear with soft touches of Cherry and Peach. There is still a lot of Minerality from the Deep Well Water. Finish: A nice long Agave and Spicy Finish that has a good run! TMM--85 Salud!!
The brand is owned by a Collaboration between The Veil Brewing Company and Y Tu Mamá Restaurant in Richmond Virginia. The group also acts as their own importer. Currently, Mosto is only sold in Virginia through the state's ABC Store system. The only redeeming feature to a State run system is being able to search their inventory... Mosto Tequila has one of the new up and coming Tequila producers making this. Oscar Vazquez Camarena is behind this project. And it seems that he is following in the footsteps of many from his family's lineage. Over the last several years, Oscar has brought to market Tierra de Ensueño. He has taken the lessons he learned with his Chemistry background and his time spent at El Pandillo to produce quality tequilas. The production of this Tequila starts in the Highlands where Estate Grown Agaves are selected. Jimadors cut and ready the piñas on land that Multi-generational Farmers are dedicated to regenerative land practices. Stone Brick Ovens are utilized in the cooking. Once cooked and cooled, agave is then macerated with Roller Mills and Deep Well Water is added. Fermintation is done in Open Stainless Steel Vats with Natural Wild Yeasts. It is then twice distilled in a combination of Copper Pot Stills and Stainless Pot Stills with Copper Coils before being proofed down. Aroma: Sweet Cooked Agave is accompanied by a light Cinnamon essence. A combination of Vegetal and Olive Brine mixes with a little Thyme and Sage. A nice Lime Citrus note is here as well. And to finish after several minutes in the glass a sweet Floral component is present. Taste: The Sweet Cooked Agave and Vegetal notes greet you at the beginning. A light Spicy Cinnamon mixes with White Pepper to give this little more backbone. The Olive Brine that was on the nose transfers on to the taste as well. The Lime Citrus has a light Melon and Floral flavor with it. And the Herbs of Thyme and Sage are both here as well. Finish: This has a nice Medium finish that brings the Cinnamon and Pepper along. Overall this is a very drinkable pour. Because of the simplicity and ease to drink, this would make a great beginners Tequila. It does have a very nice mouth feel that was visible when I purchased the bottle. There were Lipids floating in the Tequila that easily dissipated after a good shake. I would love to see this version proofed between 92-100. That is where this would absolutely shine! Salud!!!
