Sweet nose of agave and licorice. I get almond and caramel and oak. Citrus. Lemon and orange. On the palate, not much agave but I get vanilla and licorice and oak. Some orange and some caramel.
Nose of nice agave and caramel taste is similar agave, cinnamon, citrus and caramel
Nose: cooked agave cinnamon almond orange and fkoral notes Mouthfeel: medium bodied Palate: Heavy Stonefruit (peach, maybe? vanilla, oak and a hint of carmel Finish: Oak, Cinnamon, Salt, Caramel, Agave, Definitely Peach and Floral notes This is an incredibly unique sip. I can't recall a tequila ever bringing out such a distinct peach profile. The finish confirmed the initial flavor. Solid and unique, this is a light for a repo. Of all the repos I've had, this one screams "summertime repo".
Santaleza nom 1604 Carmen, owner of san matias, son's distillery. its next door I want to revisit to get better notes and rating Anejo Nose is very good Repo is good
Sampled at MBTC, 10/23.
Aromas - overripe strawberries, dry mesquite, ozone, citrus. Flavors - light caramel, cedar, salt, bitter orange, white pepper. Finish is lingering, bitter and full of minerality. I’m ambivalent about this tequila at present, I don’t dislike it, but it’s not thrilling.
The aroma is a light agave and simple caramel with alcohol looming in the background. The flavor continues the agave/caramel combination but brings in licorice/anise. This is where it lost me. No need for the licorice. The finish is smooth with the main lingering taste of licorice. There’s a slight lip/tongue tingling but not a burn or alcohol sensation. I recommend for people who enjoy licorice/anise but if that flavor is not your thing then try another product. I may try the blanco to see if this is a flavor profile that the distiller was trying to achieve. I have friends that enjoy the licorice and a bit of caramel. They will like this. Licorice is such a dividing taste. Revisited this after a week. I raised the score. The 2 extra points were added for flavor and finish. There’s consistency throughout the product. I recommend
The distillery is owned by Juan Pablo Lopez-Villareal. Juan Pablo is the son of Carmen Lopez-Villareal of Casa San Matias. Santaleza is a collaboration project between Chopin Imports and the Lopez-VillarealFamily. Master Distiller is Rodolfo Gonzales. Agaves are selected at peak Brix levels. Then they are slow Cooked in Stone/Brick Ovens before being macerated with a Tahona. After mixing with Natural Spring Water it is fermented in Wooden Vats. It is then distilled twice in Copper Pot Stills before resting in Used American Whiskey Barrels for 4 months. Aroma: Very Sweet Cooked Agave centric with a nice Vanilla, Caramel, and Oak scent greeting you. Citrus (Orange) is very prominent. There is a nice Floral component as well. An Earthy and Minerally aroma exist. Cinnamon and Baking Spices let you know it's spent some time in a barrel. There's also a sweet Fruity and Almond note that can be detected. Taste: Sweet Cooked Agave, Spicy Cinnamon and Baking Spices right out of the gates. Vanilla and the Orange Citrus mix with the Caramel and Oak notes. There is also a little Black Pepper that does mix with the Earthiness of this. The Floralness from the Aromas is very pleasant on the Taste. And the Fruity and Almond does come to the tasting side as well. Finish: The Sweet Agave and Cinnamon flavors ride a nice medium length journey that is accompanied by the Vanilla and Orange Citrus. Some sweet barrel nose, solid agave going thru while maintaining oak profile. longers spicier finish.
Wonderful cooked agave smell, vanilla and pepper. Medium heat very approachable. Cooked agave initially then subsidies to vainilla and light cream burlé type of flavor . The finish is medium. Great additive free tequila!
Very spicy if drinking neat. I like it much better when poured over ice to dilute a bit. Has a light sweet taste up front, but then strong alcohol finish. It is crisp, & doesn't linger on the tongue. Lots of alcohol on the nose, not much else. Recommended to me as a cheaper, but close in taste substitute to Forteleza. As I've never had Forteleza, I cannot confirm nor deny that. Update: now that I'm through most of the bottle, I find that I do enjoy this tequila. It's lost the alcohol finish I noted in the beginning & is a pleasure to drink.
Santaleza Reposado $66 USD (Ferment and Still) Overall: A natural and well crafted reposado that is an exquisite progression from the blanco. Light and soft on the nose and palate. Great sipper, albeit a priced a tad high. Nose: The fresh agave is present with light oak, light orange blossom floralness, honey sweetness, butter-caramel, light vanilla, dried tropical fruits, and traces of almonds. Taste: Soft, oily mouthfeel that really coats the palate. A nice pop of cracked pepper spice. Initial cooked agave with anise bitterness, oak, vanilla and caramel. Finish: Finish with a melow sweetness, vanilla and a touch of salted caramel.
