I could just simply say 'run don't walk', and go buy Gran Dovejo Tequila, but let me take some time to explain why.
A truly good blanco is hard to find. You can’t use the aging process to cover up any unpleasantness, and the agave has to shine. Shine it does is this bright, rich, agave experience! That’s why Gran Dovejo Blanco has a permanent spot in our home bar.
Sometimes, a tequila is so good that you can't wait to get your hands on the rest of the line. I was fortunate enough to have the Gran Dovejo Reposado a short while back that I was very anxious to try to base blanco juice from the line.
The Tequila Whisperer dives into all three varieties of Gran Dovejo tequila.
Leopoldo Solis is the mastermind behind many well-respected tequilas. After our review of his most recent creation, Tequila Gran Dovejo, we were invited to meet Mr. Solis in person while he was traveling through Mexico City.
Gran Dovejo is made in the highlands of Jalisco using many of our favorite techniques: the use of very ripe single-estate agave, cooked in clay ovens, distilled in copper pots, and created in small batches. (In other words even more “clues.”)
Lime citrus aromas are complimented by black pepper, light anise, an array of herbal notes, some agave sweetness, leafy mint, and a pleasant minerality throughout. The flavor consists primarily of a vegetal sweetness coupled with a similar profile to the aroma, with the anise coming through a bit stronger on the palate than the nose. On the finish, a consistent and lasting mix of citrus and anise flavors, as well as black pepper.
