On the nose, oak, vanilla and caramel. I’m not really picking up much agave. Very sweet nose. On the palate, the vanilla and oak are stars of the show. Barrel spice, caramel, and something like toffee. Moderate sweetness, very oily and full bodied. Overall this isn’t bad. A little sweet and overoaked for my taste, but it’s drinkable and enjoyable. Not sure about additives, a slight bitterness makes me wonder but it’s not over the top.

Sampled neat in a brandy snifter at a restaurant for USD17 a pour. Price seems fair. I've had the other Azuñia expressions and this is the stand out. Aroma and flavor: agave, caramel, heavy barrel influence, toffee, slightly minty, cherry, stone fruit. Finish: pepper, agave sweetness, barrel notes, long and lingering. A pleasant mouthfeel, but no / next to no noticeable alcohol.

Azuñia Black Anejo I smell rich buttery caramel and some vanilla. I also smell some light plum and faint cinnamon. It’s a vibrant nose but not a lot of agave punching through. It’s spicy. Cinnamon and nutmeg up front. I then get some leather, tobacco, raisins and sweet agave. It reminds me of a dark spiced rum. There is some lingering pepper on the finish. The finish is sweet and peppery with a pleasant alcohol tingle.

Full bodied Anejo that drinks and taste more like an XA. Well made, good balance.

this is definitely a well made spirit, but for me it lacks the agave forwardness that I look for. yes, it's an anejo, but for me it's too close to a whisky. if you like the barrel to be the star of your tequila and not the agave, this is for you. again, it's well made, it just doesn't satisfy my palate when I want tequila. I would recommend it to someone who likes that flavor profile, but I would only drink it again if I wasn't paying for the bottle. I understand I'm in the minority on this one

Absolutely amazing !! Maybe my favorite heavy anejo. This is a bold, complicated, full but balanced anejo, which rivals some extra anejos. This is a double barrelled treat. The nose is exceptional with cherry, honey, smoke, sweet whiskey, oak and caramel. Tastes of vanilla with roasted nuts, some fruit with melon on the backend. Not cheap, but compared to some XA's I've had....this is a deal.

One of the reasons I love tequila is due to the unlimited surprises a bottle will deliver. Sometimes you’ll be so surprised you want to scream your excitement from the rafters. Azuñia was one of those times for me. The aroma brings you in like the scent of the hookah in a Woody Woodpecker cartoon. The smoothness of the initial taste gradually heats up after swallowing tingling your tastebuds enough to bewilder your mind. The experience is so complex you can’t help but smile… and take another sip!

Azuñia Black Anejo;    Lote #AAB922,   Bottle # 32144;    Overall: A rich, heavy anjeo that one may confuse as an XA.  At $106 (USD), this a great XA substitute.  It's rich on the nose, supple in the mouth and an elegant, dry finish.  Aroma: I'll steal from Long Island Lou - 'The nose is exceptional with cherry, honey, smoke, sweet whiskey, oak and caramel.' Spot on with the upfront character. While I don't get a lot of agave, the backend aromas bring up cinnamon, nutmeg, tobacco, raisin, and black pepper spice.  There is A LOT going on with the nose.    Taste: I recommend you really chew this one to get appreciate the fullness it offers.  Butter, cinnamon, cherry, charred oak, pepper, and nutmeg straight away.  A nice build up of light caramel, vanilla, with toasted oak, tobacco, and dried raisins. Finish: Mild sweetness, light pepper, cinnamon, and dark plum.

Aroma is the strongest point here, taste is also fantastic, but struggles a bit on the finish compared to the rest of the experience. There is a great deal of oak throughout, but on the finish the oak becomes a bit dry, alcoholic, tannic and slightly more bitter than I’d prefer, and it tends to linger like that for a while. Nose is lovely…I could sit and sniff this one for hours. Strong oak and maybe even an old, rolled, unlit cigar type of tobacco undertone, and sweet caramel overtone. Flavor is wonderful and is where the oak really punches you in the face. Very little sweetness on the palate compared to the nose, as there is more of a cinnamon and baking spices presence that takes over. Only taste complaint is that it does lack a bit of body and mouthfeel compared to some other premium tequilas I’ve had. Granted, I’m not sophisticated enough to know whether I’m comparing this to tequilas with additives or not, so perhaps others I’ve had are “cheating” somewhat on that point, but I just feel it’s a bit thin on the palate. I detect zero agave here as it has been fully conquered by the oak and aging.

Kinda boring EA tequila. It just doesn't have depth or any special interests. Pretty much what you should expect from a diffuser and stainless tank tequila.

Sipped on patio at Barrio Queen in Old Town Scottsdale. Fantastic, complicated, bold aromas and flavors of caramel, vanilla, almond, cinnamon, nutmeg & oak. Super smooth finish.

This is a great gateway transitional tequila for bourbon drinkers. Very tasty pour. Definitely purchase again and recommend it highly.
