Make no mistake my tasting notes are based on a 1999 pre-diffuser anejo Beautiful viscosity and full on agave forward. Followed by candied walnuts, cherries, almond, mocha, butterscotch, light vanilla. Had a chance to taste it along with a newer Herradura Seleccion Suprema XA, and this old añejo blew it away...

This Sazarac Import was bottled almost 17 years ago to the day 28 07 04. This is very aromatic with heavy char notes hanging in the air after pouring to a Glencairn. Slight viscosity in the mouth as well as some agave sweetness along with an bitter element from the barrel. If it still tasted like this it would be a big seller.

Intro: Have been trying a number of different añejos recently, and found this bottle at a good price. I like the history behind the Herradura brand, and hope to visit the distillery this summer. Aroma: A sweet vanilla cream smell hits right away, with notes of butterscotch. I cannot tell if this is achieved through additives, but if not, it’s quite an amazing aroma to achieve. Taste: Slightly sweet with vanilla and butterscotch overtones. Has a stronger alcohol taste than other añejos I’ve tried. Finish: It goes down well, with a strong alcohol bite that I personally enjoy. The stronger alcohol bite mixes nicely with the vanilla and butterscotch. I can see how many would not enjoy the finish, however. Overall: A very decent añejo tequila that straddles the line between being a sipper or a mixer. I like that Brown-Forman, despite their reputation as an alcohol conglomerate, has in recent years increased the quality of Herradura, despite initially screwing it up so badly. It’s a brand with history, and it deserves to continue to be well-made.

Nice smell but not a good finish. Very vanilla/ Caramel but finish is not there.

I suppose it fits the price catagory fairly well as it does not taste like a cheap TQ but definitely not higher end either. Would be a good gateway TQ to help comparisons. Was drinkable with some good aroma and initial flavor but finish is flat and reminiscent of college shots. More of a mixer not a sipper.

Sweet aroma at first. Much of butterscotch and ripe red fruits I spot at nose. Woody taste come all around. Maple and apple are also present. Feels like additives. Not a pleasant aftertaste. No agave taste at all. Would not have it again.

Another well priced Anejo for that everyday Anejo consumer.

MO3 07:56 LOTE 12116C0202 Oak, sweet vanilla and varnish dominate the aroma. The vanilla and oak (fresh oak resin) carry through on the flavor with some honey and prune notes. Astringent alcohol finish, especially hitting the back of the throat. Lacks agave. Watery mouth feel. Giving it a 7 on the Value, which is misleading because I would not buy it again. Many better options available

So much mint and earth on here, reminds me that this process all starts with a plant! I’m a fan of this juice, it’s consistent and can be found in most places around the world.

Nose: Bright nose. Floral notes, filberts, minerals and ripe fruit. Hints of wood sap. Flavors: Agave, nuts, pepper and caramel. Finish: Pepper, oak and a whisper of vanilla on the back of the tongue.

Not sure what happened to this because it was once a solid Tequila. Now all i can smell is a varnish-like defect and fake wood.

Smells musty, but taste is fresh and complex. Warms the mouth.

LOT: 18234I1352 Blind tasting with: Tapatío, Siete Leguas, Tepozán, Cascahuín y Herradura, all añejos. View: Golden, good tear adhesion. Freshly served; Aroma: lots of wood, lots of vanilla, minerality, astringency, hazelnut, chocolate, herbaceousness, dried red fruits. Taste: sweetness, lots of wood, hazelnut, astringency. It smells better than it tastes, the aftertaste goes away quickly, hints of black pepper. I let it oxygenate so that it opens for 20 minutes. Aroma: I think it opened well and the aroma is better than at the beginning, nuts, sweetness, herbaceousness, wood, vanilla, dried fruits. Taste: lots of wood, very interesting, pleasant astringency, nuts, robust vanilla, a very pleasant citrus and astringent aftertaste. Plum.

It’s syrupy and artificial tasting to me.

I’ll never understand Herradura’s insistence on making their expressions so vanilla forward, but at least this anejo packs subtle oak, caramel & butterscotch notes.

Compared a newer lot: 17322H1651 bottled on 18-11-2017, to a 90’s bottling with the brown metallic front & rear label that states it is aged for 2.5 years. 2017 bottling, points are for this bottle which has higher points: Color: yellow. Aroma: light sweet cooked agave, light black pepper, good sweet sour & acidic balance, light citrus, fresh. Very light vanilla & wood notes. Palate: confirms aromas perceived, wood notes slightly stronger on the palate but not overpowering. Finish is medium to long, light sweet cooked agave with light vanilla & wood notes persist. 90’s bottling (80 points): Color: yellow to dark yellow. Aroma: similar to the 2017 bottling, the wood note is more intense, therefore covers up part of agave and other aromas. Palate & finish are also similar to 2017 bottling, also more woody.

A sweet aroma and bright nose. Oak, sweet vanilla and butterscotch come around with a nice bite, but not too strong. Money well spent for what I paid.

Great, sweet aroma. Notes of vanilla and caramel. Flavor is overwhelmed by the alcohol. Not a pleasant finish.

Review #223 - Herradura Tequila Anejo

Herradura is a strange brand for me. It's been inconsistent in all of its ages. This review is on a new bottling of the anejo, which has, for me, consistently been the best of the bunch.
